My Writing

Javacia writes

My love for journalism began when I was only a teen. My first byline was in The Birmingham Times, the Southeast’s largest black weekly newspaper. Since then I’ve seen my byline on the pages of USA Today, The Seattle Times, The Chicago Sun Times, and The Courier-Journal in Louisville, Ky., as well as in national magazines like Heart & Soul, a health and fitness magazine for women of color, and Hispanic Executive, a business magazine for latino professionals.

For four years I worked as a staff reporter for Velocity Weekly, a lifestyle weekly for 20-somethings and 30-somethings that was published by The Courier-Journal in Louisville, Ky. During my time with Velocity I also contributed to The Courier-Journal’s features section and to its women’s magazine HerScene.

Currently I write for a number of national and local media outlets including USA Today premium publications and Birmingham magazine. I also blog for WBHM 90.3 FM, Birmingham’s National Public Radio affiliate.

I’ve done stories for trade publications for truck drivers and articles for women’s fashion magazines.  Thus, I truly believe I can write about anything. My favorite topics to cover, however, include women’s issues, race matters, and fitness. I also enjoy writing profiles.
