5 Things That Made Me a Happy Feminist This Week

One of my readers requested that I bring back this feature. This reader is also one of my favorite people on the planet (you know who you are) so I was happy to comply.

Here are 5 things that made me a happy feminist this week:

1. Misty Copeland became the first African-American principal ballerina for the American Ballet Theatre. I’ve been waiting for this moment since I read Copeland’s memoir last year and as a teacher at a fine arts school I know how important this moment is for aspiring professional dancers. I have seen firsthand the impact that Copeland career has had on young dancers, especially female dancers of color. Take a moment to take in her greatness. Head over to Bust.com to see a collection of Copeland’s best performances.

2. Roxane Gay’s TEDWomen Talk was finally posted on the TED website. I was fortunate enough to view a live stream of her talk and several others at TEDxBirminghamWomen in May. When Gay’s talk was finish I wanted to shout, take up a collection and open the doors of the church. See it for yourself:

3. LEGO’s newest characters encourage girls to explore math and science. Visit Bust.com for more.

4. America Ferrera wrote an open letter to Donald Trump in response to comments he made about Latino immigrants. Here’s a snippet:

You’ve said some pretty offensive things about Latino immigrants recently, and I think they’re worth addressing. Because, you know, this is the United States of America, where I have a right to speak up even if I’m not a billionaire. Isn’t that awesome?

Anyway, I heard what you said about the kind of people you think Latino immigrants are — people with problems, who bring drugs, crime and rape to America. While your comments are incredibly ignorant and racist, I don’t want to spend my time chastising you. I’ll leave that to your business partners like Univision and NBC, who have the power to scold you where it hurts. Instead, I’m writing to say thank you!

You see, what you just did with your straight talk was send more Latino voters to the polls than several registration rallies combined! Thank you for that. Here we are pounding the pavement to get American Latinos to the polls, while your tactic proves most effective. Remarks like yours will serve brilliantly to energize Latino voters and increase turnout on election day against you and any other candidate who runs on a platform of hateful rhetoric.

Read the full letter here.

5. Glamour magazine announced that producer and former model Jessica Lewis is preparing to debut Straight/Curve, a documentary that delves into the world of plus-size modeling.

The documentary will examine the complex relationship between the fashion industry, mainstream media, and body image in society and questions such as: “When, how, and why did size zero become the norm when two thirds of women are considered ‘plus-size’ sitting between a size 10 to 14?”

Even a Girl Boss Needs a Break

relax

Dear Girl Boss,

Tomorrow is a national holiday, July 4th. Since this holiday falls on a Saturday chances are you don’t have to go to your 9 to 5 today.

You’re tempted to work ALL DAY. You’re tempted to spend the next 8, 10, or even 12 hours working on your business and blog, working on that after-hours side hustle, that part-time project that you hope will one day become your full-time career.

But don’t do it.

Today I want you to give yourself permission to take the day off.

Even a girl boss needs a break.

I used to have an all-work, no-play attitude. I called myself Javacia “No Days Off” Bowser. Then I hit the wall. I broke down. I got burned out and discouraged and wanted to quit EVERYTHING. Even my health was affected. It was not pretty and a lot of crying was involved.

After that I committed to taking off one day every week and that has made all the difference. I think you’ll find it actually makes you better at blogging and business. I did. Writers and artists call these breaks a creative pause because as you’re resting you’re actually allowing your creativity to flow more freely. So when you get back to work your ideas will be bigger and better.

I don’t always keep my promise to myself to take a day off and when I don’t I certainly notice a difference — the tears and self-doubt quickly come back.

If you’re anything like I was, Girl Boss, you probably don’t even know what to do with a day off! Here are a few things you could do that will help you relax but also keep you inspired:

  • Go for a walk or run on your favorite trail.
  • Spend time with family.
  • Get a mani/pedi.
  • Have brunch with your best friend.
  • Get a massage.
  • Catch up on your favorite magazines or TV shows.
  • Read a book (that’s not about business).
  • Spend the entire day on the sofa in your pajamas watching movies.

Do you have the day off? How will you give yourself a break?

How to Rebrand in Style

Megan at her brand relaunch soiree

If you know me you know I am a huge fan of style coach Megan LaRussa Chenoweth. She’s my brand and business role model and the prototype of how women can transition from lady blogger to boss lady.

Megan started a fashion blog years ago when she was going to school and working in New York. The purpose was just to share her adventures in style and what she was learning about the latest trends with her friends and family back home in Birmingham, Alabama. But soon people started asking her to help them with their wardrobes. Then she started styling for magazine photo shoots and fashion shows. Her blog turned into a booming business that for years has been known as Southern Femme.

Last week Megan revealed that she and her team were rebranding. Her website, social media channels and business name are now Megan LaRussa and with the new name comes a new focus: Megan has decided to only focus on style coaching and she will no longer be styling for magazines or fashion shows.

A quick snapshot with Megan at her soiree

In true Megan fashion, she and her team unveiled the new brand with a fabulous soiree held at The Nest in Birmingham. I was honored to attend and after the party I had a chat with Megan about her decision to rebrand in hopes that she could offer advice to any other lady bloggers and boss ladies out there who may think it’s time for a change.

How did you decide that it was time for rebranding and what advice would you give to someone trying to decide if she should rebrand?

I’ve been feeling the need to rebrand for quite some time.  It wasn’t that I didn’t like my previous branding, company name, logo, or site, it was more so that my company was changing directions and I needed a new brand that reflected those changes.  For over a year and a half now I have been wanting to focus my energy solely on my style coaching clients, but I was afraid to leave my other work behind.  I have been doing wardrobe styling and fashion show production since I moved back to Birmingham from New York City and I almost felt paralyzed at the thought of turning down these kinds of jobs.  I just kept saying yes.  It wasn’t that they weren’t great jobs or I didn’t enjoy the work or the people I had the pleasure of working with, it was more the fact that style coaching was and is my true passion.  It was with the help of my business coach, and the support of my fabulous style coaching clients and team that I finally decided to move forward.  The rebrand has “sealed the deal” so to speak, allowing my company to help me move forward in the direction I desire.

For anyone trying to decide if they should rebrand, I encourage them to really think about what their current branding is projecting.  Is it projecting the right “image”? Is it showcasing your skill set in a unique light?  Is it speaking to your target market?  But even more importantly, think about what aspects of your business really bring you joy and fulfillment.  Is your brand allowing you to focus on those areas you are passionate about? If not, it’s time to rebrand!

Logistically speaking, how did you go about rebranding your website and social media?

It has been a six-month process, and it’s not done yet!  It all began with the initiative to turn my dream of rebranding into a reality.  I had to get the ball rolling by finding a branding firm that understood my unique services, and the direction I wanted to take my company in.  I luckily was able to call on my friend Laura Kate Whitney and her team.  They helped me turn my thoughts on what I wanted my new brand to look like into a few rounds of drafts and, finally, into a new logo, color palette, business cards, and most recently website.  It did not happen overnight; this process took a few months.  During this time, I worked on other aspects of my rebrand.  I hired a professional photographer to spend two days with me capturing the work I love doing.  These became the images I am now using on my site, social media sites, etcetera.

Once the logo was complete I focused on how to use it outside of my website and social media channels.  My team and I then created business cards, brochures (they look like clutches!), stationary, stickers, and more.  We also hired a talented web developer using the site, upwork.com, to turn our graphic designer’s work into a fresh, new website.  That took a close to a month to implement properly.  Many, many edits had to be made as my team and I are perfectionists.  As the final tweaks were being made, I began changing all of my social media channels over to my new company name, Megan LaRussa.  Finally, it was time to celebrate!  After much planning and team work, we hosted a stylish soiree for our clients and colleagues announcing our rebrand!  Once we shared the exciting news with those we work with most, it was time to announce to our social networks.  This is when we changed images, logos, and made the big announcement.  But it doesn’t stop there. We will be working all summer and into fall to showcase our new brand, our expanded services and all in all our passion for bringing style and confidence to women.

How did you decide to have the brand relaunch soirée and how do you feel it helped your brand?

In the 6 years I have been back in Birmingham, I have never hosted a soiree celebrating my clients or my company.  It finally felt like the right time.  I adore my clients and it seemed only right to show them how much they mean to me through a stylish evening out.  Many of my clients told me after our night of rosé, desserts, and great conversation at The Nest that it was just what they needed.  They needed an evening out away from work, kids, and other responsibilities.

I feel the gathering helped my brand in that it connected my VIP clients to a larger style community, making them feel like they are a part of something bigger.  It also allowed me to meet my Style Yourself Chic virtual clients face to face, again creating beautiful connections.  Lastly, it helped me spread the word about my rebrand to those I work with the most.  It allowed my team and I the opportunity to explain the rebrand to them first.  I also loved gifting my attendees with a “my stylish tee” party favor to allow them to spread the word visually of our rebrand, and to show them how special they are to me.

Were you nervous at all about rebranding?

Absolutely!  Anytime you change something that is important to you it is scary.  It made it especially nerve-wreaking since my business was doing great and growing rapidly as is, but I knew it was time for a change.  I had been dragging my feet for too long, and I was finally ready to take that next step towards fulfilling my dream of just being a style coach.  It is also scary for anyone that owns their own business to invest heavily in their company like you have to during a rebrand.  But take your time, do it right, hire the right people, and it will be well worth the investment.  I have an amazing mentor that told me that a rebrand doesn’t come along very often and thus it is worth doing it right.  If you listen to your instincts, have great mentors, and follow your dreams, then investing in yourself, your company, and ultimately your clients is well worth it!

Fun fact: Megan LaRussa Chenoweth was the afternoon keynote speaker at last year’s See Jane Write Bloganista Mini-Con. Megan’s talk is what inspired me to make the transition from lady blogger to boss lady and start making the moves that lead to me being recognized by the Birmingham Business Journal as one of the city’s Top 40 Under 40. Perhaps this year’s Bloganista Mini-Con could be just what you need to take your blog to the next level. If you’re in the Birmingham area and would like to attend visit SeeJaneWriteBham.com/Bloganista for details.

Stop Being a Blogger Who Doesn’t Blog

a blogger who doesn't blog

On July 19, 2014 I decided to start taking myself seriously as a businesswoman. I decided I wanted to transition from lady blogger to boss lady. As so I did just that. And seven months later on February 19, 2015 I was being honored by the Birmingham Business Journal as one of the city’s Top 40 Under 40 in business all because of See Jane Write, the website and local membership organization for women writers, bloggers, entrepreneurs that I run.

bbj-ceremony

But there was just one problem: In the midst of building my business, I abandoned my blog.

Sure, I kept blogging for the See Jane Write website, but my posts for WriteousBabe.com were few and far between and the blog for my portfolio site became a ghost town.

I realized I had become a blogger who doesn’t blog.

But that changes today. I am committing to blogging every day for the next 31 days in order to get back into the swing of things (I have an extreme personality, so for me it’s either go hard or go home). After this month I’ll decide on a schedule that I can maintain and stick to that.

Here’s how I plan to keep myself motivated and how you can stay motivated to maintain your blog too:

Allow your blog to evolve with you. Because I’ve been so business-minded lately it’s been hard to write about anything else. So I’ve been quiet on my personal blogs. But that’s silly. Why not use my personal blog as a way to give folks a behind-the-scenes look into my life as a businesswoman so they can get tips on how to make that transition from lady blogger to boss lady, too?!

Set a long-term goal and vision for your blog and stay focused on that. Keeping the See Jane Write website updated was easy because I had clear goals and plenty of programs and events to promote. With my personal blog I lost my sense of purpose and thus my drive to write. But now I know I want to use my personal blog to build a platform for myself beyond Birmingham. I’m dreaming of calls from Essence Magazine and Black Girls Rock and being recognized by Forbes.

Have fun! My blog won’t be all business all the time. I’ll write about fashion, fitness, and feminism, too. Plus, I hope to show you just how much fun running a business can be. I also plan to have more fun on social media. I’m especially focused on building my Instagram following right now so be sure to follow me @writeousbabe. And I’m obsessed with Periscope so follow me there, too, please.

What do you do to keep yourself motivated to blog?

Are You a Goal Digger?

goal digger

Are you a goal digger? I am.

Lately, many people have adopted a too cool for school attitude about New Year’s resolutions. Some folks think setting goals at the start of the year is a waste of time. You won’t accomplish them anyway, right?

WRONG!

I think it’s a great idea to set goals at the start of the year. It’s such a great way to get motivated and re-energized.

Earlier this month on WriteousBabe.com, I shared some of my resolutions in the blog post “Resolutions for Writeous Babes.”

I also shared my feminist New Year’s resolutions in my January column for B-Metro magazine.

I must confess, though, that there was a time when every December I would compile a list of 99 things — yes, 99 things! — that I wanted to achieve the following year. As you might have guessed, I didn’t accomplish most of these. Many were forgotten by April!

But I have finally developed an efficient and effective goal-setting process that has helped me accomplish so many of my personal and professional aspirations.

Last week on WriteousBabe.com, I shared five mistakes that you might be making when setting goals. These are five mistakes I often made until recently.

This week I had the honor of hosting a goal-setting workshop for some members of See Jane Write, the network for women writers, bloggers and entrepreneurs that I run in Birmingham. I had a blast walking these ladies through my personal goal-setting process. It was such a joy to see them establish lofty aspirations of their own.

If you need help setting your goals for 2015, consider enrolling in my time management e-course How to Write and Have a Life. This course features lessons on goal-setting and drafting vision statements because having clear and specific goals is one of the best ways to make the most of your time.

Write on, goal diggers!

The Year of the Writeous Babe

The Year of the Writeous Babe

Happy New Year!

I declare 2015 to be The Year of the Writeous Babe.

What’s a writeous babe?

A writeous babe is a woman who writes and lives a life worth writing about.

A writeous babe is a woman who blogs like a boss. She has an entrepreneurial spirit and is ready to transform her writing into wealth and her blog into a business.

A writeous babe is not here for the starving artist cliche. She knows she must be a well-fed writer so that she can nourish the world around her.

A writeous babe is a goal digger! She has the imagination to unearth bold and beautiful dreams and the courage to make them come true.

A writeous babe has some stories and she wants to look good while she shares them. This is not vanity. Her stunning beauty is simply the result of self-care. A writeous babe rejuvenates her body with exercise, replenishes her body with delicious, healthful foods, and restores her body with relaxation and rest.  And everything with which she adorns her body — from the hair on her head to the shoes on her feet — celebrates her unique and authentic style.

A writeous babe believes in women’s empowerment and the sanctity of sisterhood. Thus, part of her life’s work is to help other women and girls find their voices and let them be heard.

Are you a writeous babe?

Of course you are!

And this year you will begin to live the life of your dreams and I am here to help you do so.

All year long every blog post I publish, every newsletter I send,  and every e-course, webinar or video training I release will be aimed at helping you accomplish your goals and build a beautiful life.

Are you with me?
